Thursday 7th Mat 2020 was International Thalassaemia Day.
This informative image is designed to raise awareness around Thalassaemia created by Smart Cells.
- Thalassaemia is an inherited blood disorder that affects the body’s ability to produce haemoglobin and red blood cells. It affects 1 in 100,000 people worldwide.
- Cord blood stem cells can cure Thalassaemia. Stem cells replace the impaired blood making cells with haemopoietic (blood making) stem cells that can function correctly.
- Cord blood from a sibling can treat Thalassaemia. Siblings have a 1 in 4 chance of matching a cord blood sample. At Smart Cells we have released samples for 4 children for the treatment of Thalassaemia.
